Many items of our daily use could become dangerous when transported by air - for that reason they are not allowed in checked in and carry-on baggage.
What are „Dangerous Goods?“
Dangerous Goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing significant risk to people, health, property or environment when transported. These articles or substances may be found in passenger baggage, hand luggage, or even on one’s person. The Legal Basis for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air can be found in the national law and its regulations, as well in Annex 18 of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), in particular in Part 8 of the Technical Instructions.
Furthermore Austro Control GmbH suggests to check IATA’s Dangerous Goods Regulations (current edition), as many passengers travel with IATA member airlines and procedures are sometimes even more restrictive. In addition to important information for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air provisions of information concerning passengers, mandatory for operators, can be found in the international technical instructions for the safe transport of Dangerous Goods by Air. Dangerous Goods Information for passengers is shown on passenger tickets, check-in counters, as well as boarding gates.
Attention should also be paid to national and international security regulations, for example the EU-Security-Regulation (EU 185/2010), which partly differs from the dangerous goods regulations.
